65 colleagues from major Peterborough employer, BGL Insurance (BGLi), have successfully completed over 170 hours of volunteering as part of the first ever Big BGLi Clean Up – a litter picking initiative to support the local environment. Throughout the summer, volunteers were provided with free litter picking kits to help clean up the local areas surrounding BGLi’s Peterborough and Sunderland sites.

The Big BGLi Clean Up forms part of BGL Insurance’s wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda, with a key focus on helping to protect the environment. As part of this programme, BGLi has committed to ambitious carbon reduction targets and the launch of a series of eco initiatives, including the implementation of a new environmental policy and the introduction of environmental champions to help drive progress.

Emily Taylor, CSR Manager at BGL Insurance, said: “We love a challenge here at BGLi and we are great at pulling together as a team. Challenges do not come much bigger than the environmental crisis we are all facing and there’s a great deal we can do as a company, community and as individuals to be part of the solution. We will continue to challenge ourselves as a business and encourage colleagues in setting personal targets to ensure we tread more lightly on our planet. We are thrilled to see so many of our colleagues getting involved and more importantly, enjoying making a difference in our local communities!”

Melanie Miller, Big BGLi Clean Up Volunteer and Senior Manager of Partner Support, shared her recent experience: “I have a little park near me that is used by most of the community. It’s a lovely, peaceful area but is blighted by rubbish, so it was really satisfying to spend time giving it a good clean-up and it only took a few hours. Many people stopped to thank me and ask where I got the kit from as they would like to do the same. I have now been inspired to get my own kit and carry on the clean up!”
